A job interview is an essential step in the process of seeking employment. It is usually the final hurdle between the candidate and the job they want. Because of its importance, a job interview can be a very nerve-wracking experience, especially for those going through it for the first time.

Unfortunately, first-time job interviewees often need to correct their chances of getting the job. It is common for them to commit such mistakes, but it is always better to be prepared beforehand.

To help you avoid some basic errors that could prove to be costly, Noble Direct has put together a list of the most common mistakes made by interviewees on the first interview.

1. Not being prepared
This is a very common mistake made by most candidates. The applicant should always research the company and the role they are interviewing for to be better prepared for the interview.

2. Uncertain about their future goals
Most employers want to know where you want to be in the future. There are many opportunities and positions you can consider to be at the top of your game, including management, team lead, CEO, etc.

3. Inability to set long- and short-term goals
Everyone who interviews for a role should always prepare short and long-term goals. Be it three months, six months, or even a year, a goal should always be at the back of your mind. This allows the company to know if your goals align with theirs.

4. Dressing inappropriately
Whether in a zoom or in-person interview, you should always dress for your desired role. Remember, the first interview is the company’s first impression of you as a potential employee.

5. Failing to follow through
Your time and the time of the company are both very valuable, so if you are given the opportunity for a second or third interview, always be honest about whether you are still interested in the position. If you accept the invitation, be curious enough to inform the company as soon as possible if circumstances change that prevent you from attending the interview.
